Light Bearers: a Vision for the Arts, Entertainment, and Sports

We become what we behold.
— Marshall McLuthan

According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year).  In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years watching film and television.

A very successful advertising executive explained that he could tell who was discipling the teenager, within minutes of stepping into that child’s room.  It was apparent from the posters on the walls, the shoes in the closet, and the entertainment he watched or listened to.

One of the most powerful aspects of entertainment is that it allows the artist or creative team to communicate a message, philosophy, or ideal to a very large audience.  Film, television, and music have been influential in taking the views of a small minority and imprinting our society as a whole by presenting those views in entertaining and compelling ways.

So, how do we disciple those involved in one of the most influential and powerful systems on the earth so that those disciples can, in turn, influence nations?  We must first ask: Who are we, as Jesus followers, and who is it that we follow?  The answer to this question allows artists and those in the entertainment industry to discover true love, acceptance, freedom, and understanding of the unlimited creativity that comes from a relationship with the Creator of the universe.  The answer is a person: Jesus. The person is a King.

We are light bearers, called to shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:12-18).  We serve for the pleasure of the King and we do so at His gracious invitation.  We become free to express our gifts before a King and trust that He will use those gifts for His good pleasure and purposes, allowing Him to raise us up on His time (Psalm 75:4-7).  We walk in humility (James 4:7-8).  We operate out of relationship, are intentional in our preparation, and are always being available to act according to God’s Word and ways.

We were designed to capture the heart of every generation through creative expression.  We can lead in innovation, insight, and creativity.  We were designed to display and communicate the glory of God and to make disciples of every nation.  For the pleasure of our King, we will.
