How did A Discipleship Journey (ADJ) come about?
Dave Buehring's initial discipleship manual was created in 1986 and was used for nearly two decades at his ‘Acts Alive’ youth discipleship intensives. Shortly after his 25th anniversary of disciple-making he sensed the Lord’s leading to develop something that could be used effectively by every follower of Jesus to make disciples and disciple-makers. With the encouragement and help of several of his Acts Alive colleagues, he spent six months writing and compiling from messages and material that he had used over the years, while at the same time broadening the topics and adding depth to the original manual. The first copies of A Discipleship Journey were used in the summer of 2004. The updated edition with video, Facilitators Guide, online availability and mobile app was released in the summer of 2011.

What makes A Discipleship Journey unique as a disciple-making resource?
First, it is a resource that is scripturally based, extremely practical and has proven to be effective in numerous settings over time. Second, it is comprehensive in its approach allowing many key discipleship themes to be addressed and applied via one resource over one year. Third, since we believe pastors and group leaders know their flocks and teams best the material had been designed to be easily contextualized within various settings. Fourth, with lots of room for taking notes and journaling it’s focus goes way beyond information to real life transformation. And, finally, not only does it help someone grow as a disciple of Jesus but it also provides them with an effective tool that empowers them to easily disciple others.

Why is there an entire section at the back of ADJ dedicated to the Character of God?
Because ‘the image of God carried around in our hearts and minds affects the way we live our daily lives’ it is absolutely essential to see God as He has revealed Himself in the Scriptures. As an extension of the ‘Knowing God’ chapter, these 52 attributes of God’s character allow followers of Jesus to reflect on a different attribute each week for an entire year thus renewing their minds and aligning their concepts of God to Scripture.

How and where has/is A Discipleship Journey being used?
Over the years it has been used in churches representing many denominations and backgrounds. It has been used to disciple leadership teams, small groups, men, women, young adults and youth. Several pastors have/are taking their entire congregations through it utilizing both Sunday mornings and small groups. It’s been used on campuses, in homeschool settings, on the job and among leaders serving in places like the White House. It’s been used to disciple followers of Jesus in such nations as Canada, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Romania and China. We have also distributed this resource in places like England, Australia, New Zealand, Hungary, Korea and Africa.

What is the ultimate aim of A Discipleship Journey?
To come alongside individuals, leaders and churches to aid them in obeying the command of Jesus to 'make disciples' (Mt.28:18-20), by reproducing the character, ways and mission of Jesus in those God brings around them, expecting them to multiply the same in others. It is also being used as a tool to fulfill the NetDMC '2020 Vision' of 'teaming to reproduce one million disciple-makers as catalysts in domain transformation locally and globally'
